ARTIST STATEMENT
Steering my work today is a long background in alternative photo and digital art coinciding with the urge to go back to where I started out as an artist at age six with the expressiveness of the paint brush. I like to experiment and discover alternative ways to work with my tools and materials, endlessly searching for a enviromentally respectful and sustainable art practice.
I enjoy the challenges of working with various media. Working in layers, integrating traditional formal techniques with pigment printed image transfers and contact printing. My digital world tends to linger in black and white, letting other colors speak as part of the narrative before and afterwards. While I find method a critical componant of my art, intuition also is playing a big role. My work is tactile and in the moment, particularly working with mediums such as beeswax, powered pigments, actual plant life, plant dyed fabrics, and found objects.
Inspired and mentored by nature, I reflect on the years my partner and I spent developing our humble farm. Not unlike many artists, taking references from what I’ve learned and continue to learn in life, but particularly the knowledge of the Earth’s demise. Seeing it happen right before my eyes and trying to make sense of it. Using water as a thematic vechicle to create what I could only hope to be a continued narrative of the condition of our natural enviroment.
WATER IS LIFE…
ARTIST BIO
Hilary’s career began with a BFA in computer arts with a concentration in animation. Following her college career, she co-owned a fine art atelier while working as a graphic designer. Then she found herself as an instructor of digital arts at a small liberal arts college in southern Vermont for the next twenty years. While teaching she and her partner started a small New England farm. Still running the farm from the sidelines, she now dedicates her spare time to her artwork.
